1956 Packard Panther Project

Project History

February 2001

After I decided to start this project, I saw this ad on the internet:

“1956 Packard CLIPPER SUPER, I am selling two Packards at this price! First car is a 1956 Packard Super Clipper 2 dr all original and ready to be restored. Vin#5647-2176. Second car is a 1956 Packard Executive 4dr also all original and ready to be restored. Automatic Push Button V8 IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN PACKARDS THESE TWO ARE DEFINITELY WORTH CHECKING OUT, IT'S A STEAL FOR $2500 FOR BOTH CARS. Contact: Van at (909)987-XXXX”

So I called “Van” to get a thorough description of these two Packards. The description sounded OK for my purposes: rough, but complete and restorable. I also own a 1955 Packard Patrician (5582-1640), so I am quite familiar with 1955 & 1956 models. However, the fact that made the deal was that these Packards were located in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. This is about 10 miles from the shop of an old acquaintance and former business associate of mine, Ken Crocie of H-O Enterprises (formerly H-O Racing Specialties). I called Ken who agreed to pick up the two Packards and temporarily store them in back of his shop in Etiwanda. It didn’t hurt that Van lowered the price to $2,000 if I would take care of the transporting. Both Packards will eventually be transported to Las Vegas, NV where I live. After I found out how to get a title and license registration (both were non-existent) so that I can eventually put the 2dr HT back on the road, it was an agreed upon deal. I put two $1,000 cashiers checks in Priority Mail that afternoon (guaranteed by UPSP for 2-3 day delivery).

The checks finally arrive at Ken’s shop (5 days, not 2-3). He makes arrangements with Van for the transport pickup.

February 27, 2001
The two Packards have a temporary new home at Ken’s shop. Both cars will be be commercially transported to Las Vegas sometime soon.
